A Gift of Life

OBR and their leader, Eva, have saved over 2,000 plus dogs since she, Princess Nugget and Eyvan started The Original Ohio Basset Rescue.  Eva has been a part of saving so many bassets, bloodhounds, and other breeds in need and giving them a second chance of a long and happy life, that it is time to give back with the gift of life.

Eva has had diabetes since in her early teens.  She has always been one to watch her diet and take care of herself as recommended.  However, diabetes takes a toll on a body even when you go above and beyond to take care of yourself.  Her kidneys are no longer functioning at a high enough level and after many med's, tests, and doctors visits, Eva is on the donor list for a new kidney.  Getting a donor kidney from a live donor gives about a 90% rate of success.  If you receive a donor from a cadaver or have already started dialysis, the success rate drops drastically to 30 some percent.  Eva has not yet had to start dialysis, but today had to go to an appointment because dialysis might have to start soon.  The average wait on a donor list for a kidney is 4 years.  Eva's doctor told her last week, her kidneys are not going to make it through the average wait.  I am writing this to the group to ask if anyone would like to be tested to see if they are a match.  The testing is paid for by Eva's insurance.  The first part of the test is to see if you are a blood type match.  Eva has type A blood.  She would need a kidney from a donor that also has type A blood or type O blood that is the universal blood type.  Maybe some of you already know your blood type.  If you are a blood donor, it should be printed on your blood donor card you carry in your wallet. Once a matching blood type is found there is more testing, but a matching blood type is a GREAT start, and hopefully a match for being a donor.    The surgery is taken care of by Eva's insurance.  If you have interest in giving the gift of life, please give Eva a call and she can tell you in detail what is involved.  Her number is 513-625-2036.

I would be first in line to give her a kidney-heck we only need one, the other is a back up!  My blood type is B, and I am not a candidate, but maybe I can still help by asking others,Thank you for your consideration.  I know how much we would all hope for someone to help us if the shoe was on the other foot.

Many Thanks,
Maribeth Walker

A Message From Eva:

Just wanted to let every body know I am getting my new kidney Tuesday Feb. 1. Sandy Fryman, my donor and I went for our last set of tests last week. All is well and the surgery is on. Keep your paws crossed!!

I also  want to thank all of the people who offered to get tested and the 5 matches that I have. I had 5 out of 5 matches which I am told has never happens. It must be a dog thing. :) Bud Overmyer, Kathie McConnell, JoAnn Grimes, Stuart Thaman and of course Sandy were my matches and thanks to all of you!! I will be out of commision for a while. If you have any questions you can always get with Maribeth and she will help you.
Keep your paws crossed,
